The virtual 3rd module of the transnational training envisaged within the framework of the European Project “EWCs – the European pillar of social dialogue”, financed by the European Commission, was held online on June 21 and 22, 2021. The Project, promoted by CISL Lombardia, in partnership with CGIL Lombardia, UIL Milano and Lombardia, UGT and CC.OO de Catalunya, CSDR Romania, PODKREPA Bulgaria, gives continuity to a process that started many years ago on the issue of information, consultation and participation rights of workers’ representatives in multinational companies, with the aim to providing information, know-how, sharing of experiences and tools enhancing the exercise of such rights, as well as EWC activities.

Approximately 50 EWC delegates from Italy, Spain, Romania and Bulgaria attended the course, sharing the experience accrued within their respective European Works Councils in handling the Covid-19 crisis, and gaining a deeper understanding of the digitalisation process accelerated by the pandemic, as well as the challenges and opportunities of Industry 4.0 in terms of work organisation, training and work-life balance. The discussion focused on the worker participation theme, analysing the European Social Partners Framework Agreement on Digitalisation, along with the joint European Trade Union Federations’ Recommendations on managing the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Finally, there was an extensive exchange of good practices concerning EWC reaction to the pandemic crisis.

These are some of the topics deepened during the two training days thanks to the important, efficient and comprehensive contributions of different experts, Professor Luciano Pero, Juliane Bir, Advisor ETUC, Marco Berselli, Secretary General of the FIRST CISL Milano and member of the Unicredit EWC, and Isabelle Schömann, ETUC Secretary.

With this third module ended the foreseen training path, that represented the core activity of this Project, conceived to provide concrete support to EWC delegates. The project website will continue to be implemented and “The ABCs of the EWC representative in the era of digitisation” will be published. At the beginning of the next autumn, a final transnational event will take place to disseminate the project results.
